Charles “Chas” Leon Seligman, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024, at the age of 70.
Born on December 25, 1953, in Hammond, Indiana, Chas was the cherished son of Willis and Darline (Nowicki) Seligman. He completed his high school education at Hammond Tech and went on to study Political Science at Purdue Calumet, where he was a founding member of the Purdue Chronicle newspaper. A lifelong learner, he also obtained a Master of Business from Indiana University Northwest. His love of learning led him to a fulfilling career as an educator at Merrillville High School. Chas found immense enjoyment in spearheading the Robotics Club, where he motivated and inspired his students to pursue further education in STEM.
Chas is survived by his four daughters, Sam (John), Mandy (Devon), Jess, and Beck, and his sister, Kathy (Dan) Schell. Chas’s greatest joy came from his role as a father and grandfather. He was especially proud of his three grandchildren; Jack, Hayes, and Amelia, who brought immense happiness and pride into his life.
Chas was a free-spirit who could be found at the softball field, on the golf course, or road-tripping to visit his daughters and grandchildren across the country. He supported and encouraged his daughters wherever life took them and provided them with wisdom and space to be themselves.
A Celebration of Chas’s Life will be held on August 21, 2024, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Community Park Social Center 8751 Lions Club Drive, Munster, IN. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring his memory and celebrating the rich and fulfilling life he lived.
Chas will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his wisdom, encouragement, and the positive influence he had on everyone around him. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the love he shared
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charles’s name to the Merrillville Robotics Club to support his love of STEM and continued education. Donations via check can be made out to Merrillville High School with the memo of Mr. Seligman and can be sent to 276 East 68th Place, Merrillville, Indiana 46410.
