Charles “Chuck” N. Elias, 86, of Munster, IN passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 2, 2017. He was born June 24, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Ruth and Sigfried Elias. Chuck graduated from Hyde Park High School and attended Chicago City College and then was drafted into the Army. Chuck was married to his best friend and the love of his life Helene for 61 years. Also surviving are their children, Mark (Carol) Elias, Sandi (Michael) Sweeney and Tod Elias; grandchildren, Elisse (Nathan) Trissel, Bradley (Gloria) Elias, Dawn (Michael) Lehker, Michelle (Chad) Hedrick, Meghan (Jeffrey) Kology; great grandchildren, Zachary, Haylee, Dillon, Sarah and Evan; brother, Phil (Rhoda) Elias; several nieces and nephews. Chuck worked in the wholesale meat industry. His true passion was being involved in sports. He umpired, refereed and broadcasted high school football games in Illinois and hosted a radio show on Friday nights recapping the high school football reults. Chuck wrote sports articles for the NWI Times and was often found in the White Sox press box covering the games for Elias Sports Bureau. In his later years he enjoyed covering the Railcats. Over the years Chuck interviewed players such as Ron Kittle, and got to know sportscasters as Harry Caray and Bob Costas. Chuck also ran the sports camp of JCY Camp for 14 years touching the lives of many counselors and campers. He looked forward every year to making summer fun for children. Chuck was a member and former President of Mended Hearts at Community Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chuck Elias JCY Summer Camp Scholarship, 585 Progress Ave. Munster, IN 46321. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 12:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Visitation will be one and a half hours prior to service. Interment will be at Kneseth Israel Cemetery, Hammond, IN.
