Munster, IN/Calumet City, ILOur wonderful father, Don Schaal, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014. His family will be forever grateful for his positive and happy disposition, kindness and humor, and appreciation of the simple things in life.Don is survived by his son, Randy of Schererville, IN; daughter, Debbie (Don) Zemke of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Miley and Alisa and Ryan Zemke; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; sister, Charlotte Dinwiddie; and parents, Theodore and Elizabeth Schaal.Don was born on April 26, 1925 in West Allis, Wisconsin and graduated in 1942 from Washington High School in Indiana Harbor. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Valparaiso University graduate. Don taught in the Hoover-Schrum School District in Calumet City for 27 years before becoming a longtime volunteer at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond. Working with his wonderful friends at the hospital became his favorite retirement activity.Don became a fan of his beloved Chicago White Sox as a little boy, and had a lifetime devotion to them. Few fans experienced more joy than him in 2005 when the Sox won the World Series.A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 1:30 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Avenue, Munster, IN. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Margaret’s Mercy Hospital in Hammond or the charity of your choice.
