Donald K. Hanft, 53 of Lansing, IL passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 22 years: Cheryl (nee Gnerlich); daughter: Rhiannon at the University of Illinois; sons: David (Shanda) of Highland, IN, Jason and Shawn of California; stepson: Jordan (fiance Shannon Grimmer) Smolar of Highland; mother: Datha Hanft of Highland, IN; sister: Kathryn of Monticello, IN; brother: Rick (Patryce) of Highland, IN; Proud Papa of 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; Preceded in death by his father: Richard D. Hanft. Visitation will be on Monday, August 29, 2011 from 3:00-8:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Funeral service will be on Monday at 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Don was a life long resident of the Calumet region, graduating from Highland High School, Class of 1976; after high school, he became an Ironworker and survived the Cline Avenue bridge collapse, albeit critically and permanently injured. After recovering, he turned a hobby into a professional interest and started a photography business. He returned to the Ironworker trade and was currently employed by Superior Construction Co. as a Union Stewart for the Ironworkers on the BP project. Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family in his memory would be appreciated.
