Eleanore C. Bolanowski (nee Kijowski), 91, of Hammond, IN passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Saturday, December 23, 2017. She was preceded in death by Steve her husband of 65 wonderful years. Eleanore was a devoted mother and grandmother and is survived by her sons, Stephen (Lynn) Bolanowski Jr., James Bolanowski and Thomas (Maryanne) Bolanowski; daughters, Catherine Bolanowski and Marybeth (Gary Pavelec) Bolanowski; grandchildren, Katherine, Stephen, Carli, Haley and Thomas Bolanowski; sister, Shirley (late Michael) Slifko; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Friday from 12:00 am-12:30 pm at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 12:30 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Ave. Hammond, IN. Cremation to follow service. Eleanore was born at home in East Chicago, IN and graduated from St. Casimir School in Hammond. She was Valedictorian of the Class of 1945 Bishop Noll / Catholic Central High School. She graduated Salutatorian, Magna Cum Laude, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa from the College of St. Francis Class of 1948. While overseas with her husband she worked as the Administrative Assistant for the U.S. Army Department School System in Austria and Italy. Eleanore was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1700 Women’s Club since 1958 who will have a prayer service on Thursday at 3:30 pm. She taught for many years at Bishop Noll Institute and St. John Bosco School. She traveled extensively throughout Europe and the U.S. and wintered in Marco Island Florida with her husband. Although she taught her children and grandchildren to play cards she often mused “I never learned to play poker.”In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catholic Charities, Bishop Noll Institute or the Share Foundation in her memory would be appreciated.
