Katie Lynn (Faith, Frankenstein, Fancypants) Crandol was born March 20, 1995 to Lisa and Ken Crandol. On this day, Shane and Meagan were graced with the titles of “Katie’s brother” and “I thought Katie was an only child.” From that moment on she continuously amazed all of us – sometimes in a way that made us scratch our heads, but mostly in a way that made us feel proud to know her.
Softball. That’s probably all we’d have to say here and leave everyone to fill in the blank with their own favorite stories about Katie’s softball career, but we will gush instead. Katie was an absolute BEAST on the softball field. She was an amazing player, teammate, coach, and friend as well as an inspiration to many in the community.
Katie was an Andrean High School, South Suburban Community College, and Indiana University grad just getting ready to start the “good part” of life when cancer came rearing its ugly head again in 2019. She immediately took a cruise (much to the dismay of her mom) with her boyfriend (Russ) and his family, then surrounded herself with loved ones and prepared for another fight.
There were a few constants during Katie’s fight. Nike sweatpants, her niece (Kenzie) and nephews (Jake and Ethan), mass amounts of chapstick, Chipotle burrito bowls, Panera soup, her boyfriend, her siblings, her parents and her cousin, Shelby.
Katie tried her hardest to put on a tough act (don’t get us wrong, that girl was a warrior) but everyone who truly knew her knows what a softie she was. She loved sappy movies and music and had more feelings that she’d ever care to admit. More than anything, she loved so many and was loved by so many more. Whether you knew Katie well or barely at all, she always made an impact.
Cancer had no idea who it was messing with when it picked a fight with the legendary Katie Crandol. She fought hard and won several rounds, but cancer doesn’t fight fair. Though she left us on March 3, 2021, she will continue to be with us all through memories and the laughs she forced us all to endure whether we were in the mood for it or not. We will continue to see her everywhere: Nike sweatpants and hoodies, scented candles, Twisted Tea, trips to the beach, Vera Bradley, cozy blankets, bonfires, Reese’s, bowls of cereal all day long, any single party of 2 or more people… we could make a list that wouldn’t end.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 7th from 3pm – 6pm at Kish Funeral Home in Munster, IN with a service given by one of Katie’s favorite teachers, Denise Maldonado. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the NICK Foundation at www.nwicancerkids.org.
