Leyouni Yusef Haddad, born November 27, 1933 to the late Yusef and Alice Haddad in Yaffa (Joppa) Palestine. She was one of eight children. She received her early education from the Tabeetha School in Yaffa and later with the nuns of Terra Sancta in Jerusalem. During this time, she became efficient in Italian and French languages. Leyouni frequently recalled celebrating Easter as a young girl in Jerusalem, where she experienced the miracle of the “Holy Light” several times at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
In 1948, Leyouni and her family were exiled from Yaffa and settled in the newly established Jordan where she met her husband Adib Haddad, who preceded her in heaven in 1989. While in Jordan, Adib and Leyouni had their 6 children. During this time, her husband Adib served in the Jordanian Army (Arab Army) fighting in several conflicts: Six-day War against Israel (1967); Battle of Karameh (1968); and the Jordanian Civil war (1970-71). Yet, during these troubling times Leyouni was able to keep her children safe and secure, protecting them with her love, and with her boundless faith in God.
After the Jordanian civil war (1971), Leyouni and Adib decided to move to the United States. One of the first Haddad family members to immigrate in the early 1970s, Leyouni and Adib established their life in Chicago (Hegewisch) where they raised their children. Leyouni was known to be highly skilled in her crafts of knitting, sewing, and baking. But beyond the household, all recognized her to be a genuine and most-loving individual, who sacrificed so much for her children and her grandchildren. It was her motherly love that sustained her family for generations. A grandmother of 22, and great-grandmother of 14, Leyouni was the pillar of her family. Leyouni entered in the loving embrace of Jesus Christ, our Lord, on August 22, 2024.
Leyouni was preceeded in death by her husband Adib, parents, Yusef and Alice; sisters, Bernadette Labelle (Henry), Elaine (Ghazi), Marie; brothers, Michel (Josephine), Nicola, Elias, and Anton (Suraya); son Raymon; and sons-in-law, Munier, and Basem
She is survived by her sons, Maurice (Khawala), and Victor (Heidi); daughters, Norma, Nadia (Jehad), and Mona; daughter-in-law Alice; and sister Josephine (Jamal).
Though she is no longer physically with us, her deep love for her family will remain present in us forever. May her memory be eternal.
