Milan Bohdan Matuska, devoted husband and loving father, age 86, of Valparaiso, IN, and former longtime resident of Munster, IN passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Milan is survived by his brother, John Matuska of DeMotte, IN; sons, Mark (Melissa Shary) of Chicago, IL; and Todd (Jennifer) of Rockwall, TX; grandchildren, Jonah and Lily Matuska; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Matuska; father, Michael Matuska; mother, Elena Matuska; and sister, Magdelene Bakalar (nee Matuska).
Milan was born in East Chicago, IN on October 31, 1937 and grew up in Whiting, IN, where he graduated from Whiting High School as salutatorian. He attended Valparaiso University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude with a major in mathematics and a minor in Latin. After graduating, Milan enlisted in the US Army in 1959 where he was assigned to the 38th Finance Company stationed in Heilbronn, Germany, serving until being honorably discharged in 1962. Upon returning to the States, Milan attended Indiana University to study library science for a brief time before taking a job a Central Standard Life Insurance Company in Chicago as an actuarial clerk. His love of languages took him back to Indiana University and IU Northwest to study German, Czech, and Russian. In 1965 he would accept employment at RR Donnelley & Sons as a computer programmer where he would meet his future wife Karen Matuska of 46 years. Milan would ultimately retire from RR Donnelley as a systems engineer in 1997. He served on the board of the Friends of Art at Valparaiso University; was financial secretary for the National Slovak Society in Whiting, IN; an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond, IN; a member of American Legion Post 261 in Cedar Lake, IN; and an avid supporter of Valparaiso University athletics through membership in the Crusader Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 7227 Hohman Ave. Hammond, IN, with Pastor Patrick Gumz officiating. Interment will follow at Concordia Cemetery Hammond, IN. Visitation will be on Friday, March 22, 2024 at KISH FUNERAL HOME 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN., from 3 pm to 7 pm. Memorials may be made in Milan’s name to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or VNA Hospice of Northwest Indiana.
