Peter Carr Bomberger, 82, Dune Acres, IN, formerly of Hammond and Munster, IN passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cathryn Van Buren Bomberger, and four children: Kristen (Gerard) Boston of Covington, LA; Craig (Melissa) Bomberger of Arlington, VA; Kevin Bomberger of Indianapolis, IN; and Lauren (Patrick) Fischer of Chicago IL. Peter was a loving grandfather, “Grampy,” to Luke and Claire Boston, Ella and Zoe Bomberger, and Julian and Autumn Fischer. His three sisters, Gail (Henry “Hap” Eggers) Bomberger Blackmun of Crown Point, IN; Jane Bomberger (Rafeek) Besheer of Saint John, IN; and Marjorie “Molly” Bomberger (late H.B. “Pat”) Clark of Munster, IN, take full credit for making him the successful man he was. Peter was preceded in death by his parents Charles Griffin and Helen Carr Bomberger of Hammond and Munster, IN.
Peter had a love of the outdoors, starting with summers as a teenager guiding campers on canoe trips in the Boundary Waters, and later as a father doing the same with his sons. He enjoyed working in the garden and always kept the birdfeeders full. Pete and Cathy became “snowbirds,” spending the past 10 winters in Marco Island, FL. Peter had a life-long passion for reading… it was rare to find him without a book in his lap. He began each day with a walk to get the newspaper, always starting with the sports section. He volunteered much of his time to service as a member of the Dune Acres Town Council, the Plan Commission, and the Dune Acres Civic Improvement Foundation. He served as a Board Member of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust and supported the We the People Civic Education Program. Peter was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Munster, IN.
Peter graduated from Hammond High School in 1957, from Cornell University in 1961, and from the University of Michigan Law School in 1965. He was a partner in the law firm of Blackmun, Bomberger, Tyler & Walker in Highland, IN, until his retirement in 2010. He always enjoyed and respected the practice of law and was active in support of his profession. He served as President of the Indiana State Bar Association from 1996-1997.His grandfather, Louden Lane Bomberger, and father, Charles Griffin Bomberger, were also ISBA presidents, making Peter the only 3rd-generation attorney to serve in this role. He served as President of the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (1995-1996), as President of the Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana (1994-1995), and as Chair of the Citizen Education Advisory Committee (2001-2003). Peter also devoted many years to community service for the following organizations: the School Town of Munster (President, 1982-1983); Bethany Child Care & Development Center, Hammond, IN; and May Home for Boys, Gary, IN.
