Richard S. “Dick” McClaughry, Jr., 85, of Munster, IN passed away peacefully on March 21, 2018. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Ridge United Methodist Church, 8607 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN 46321 with Pastor Michelle Knight officiating. A visitation with the family will be held before the service from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church. An interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Onaway, MI.Dick was born in East Chicago and grew up in Robertsdale/Whiting, where he graduated from George Rogers Clark High School in 1950. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1954 with a BS in Engineering. After college, Dick served for two years in the U.S. Air Force, before returning to northwest Indiana to work for Inland Steel Co. He would later earn an MBA from the University of Chicago. Dick retired from Inland Steel after 31 years of service.Dick was a member of Ridge United Methodist Church and held many leadership positions at the church as well as in various civic organizations. After retirement from Inland, Dick joined the Board of Directors of Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc. and was a board member for 25 years. He also held the position of President of the Board of Hartsfield Village for many years. Dick positively impacted many people through his hard work and involvement in the community.Dick enjoyed a variety of sports, particularly tennis, snow skiing and golf; he was a steadfast Mustang and Spartan fan. Dick inspired his family to waterski and snow ski. Memorable family vacations were spent skiing in Colorado. Above all, Dick loved his family and spending time with family and friends at their cottage on Black Lake.Dick is survived by Lois, his wife of 61 years; sons Richard (Denise) and David (Marci), daughter Linda (Donald) Erwin; grandchildren Richard IV (Ashlee), Michelle (Matthew) Kosovec, Ian, Matthew and Sara; great grandson Richard V; sister Nancy (Robert) Mahnke; sister-in-law Barbara Arnold; and five nieces. Dick was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Blake.
