A Life Well Lived
Today we gather to honor, celebrate, and remember the life of William Nathaniel Holliday, Jr., affectionately known as “Doc” — a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, caring friend, and shining example of fatherhood.
Born on May 15, 1945, in Wilmington, North Carolina, William was the beloved son of William Nathaniel Holliday, Sr. and Florence Alston. William accepted Christ at an early age and identified as Baptist. He attended Williston Senior High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force where he took basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas then was assigned to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota from 1963 to 1967.
After completing his military service, William relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he built a meaningful life rooted in hard work, family, and community. He was employed for many years with Western Electric and later with the Chicago Housing Authority in elevator maintenance.
William was known for his exceptional craftsmanship and ability to fix nearly anything. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, using his gifts to support others.
A Man of Many Joys
William found joy in simple pleasures. He loved working on cars, watching cowboy westerns, and never missed an episode of Sanford and Son. Sundays were his time of rest — lying on the floor, watching football, and taking in the quiet moments that made life rich.
In May 2024, after fifteen years, William returned home to Wilmington, a trip that meant the world to him. There, he reconnected with family, spent time with his brother Johnny Lee, and enjoyed the ocean that brought him peace and memories of fishing and beach days from his youth.
A Heart for Family and Community
Family was always at the center of William’s life. No matter the distance, he stayed connected with loved ones, offering steady support and love.
His home at 7400 Wabash became a true gathering place — filled with laughter, good food, and togetherness. Everyone felt welcome there. William was a great listener, a source of wisdom, and a pillar of strength for all who knew him.
His kindness extended beyond his own children. Many in the neighborhood affectionately called him “Dad,” a testament to the respect and love he inspired. His grandchildren cherished their time with him, often turning to him for advice — especially about cars — knowing he would always be there with patience, guidance, and a smile.
Cherished Family
William leaves to celebrate his memory: Children: Velesha, Chantel (John Michael), Tanya, and Jonathan (Kelly). Grandchildren: Justin, Gabrielle, Laurice Jr., Jaelin, Ryan, Camille, Ethan, Erin, John Daniel, and Jusiyah. Great-grandchild: Jayden, Siblings: James Albert (Joann), Patricia (Bea) and Earlene. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Florence Holliday; his siblings, Willene and Johnny Lee (Mattie); and his beloved eldest daughter, Valerie Chantel Holliday-Borum.

William will forever be remembered for his unwavering strength, humility, and devotion to family. His love, wisdom, and quiet strength touched countless lives and will continue to live on through those who knew him best. May his memory be a blessing, and may his spirit rest in eternal peace.
