Yiorgo Steven Karnezis, age 18, of Munster, passed away October 23, 2016. He is survived by his beloved parents, Steven and Georgia Karnezis, and proud, older brother, Peter Karnezis. Devoted Grandson to Koula Tsakopoulos, Pete and Julia Karnezis. One-of-a-kind nephew to Mary Karabatak, Dina Tsakopoulos, Angie (Chuck) Weis, Diane (Ken) Cooper, and Philip Karnezis. Faithful cousin to Gina, Kiki, Gia, Chloe and William. Preceded in death by his maternal grandfather George E. Tsakopoulos. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. with Trisagion Prayer Services at 6:30 p.m. at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN. Funeral will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 7021 Homan Ave, Hammond, IN with Father David Bissias officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN. Yiorgo was a freshman at Indiana State University and an associate member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Yiorgo was a graduate of Munster High School, Class of 2016. He was heavily involved in school activities including soccer, choir, track, theatre, and many more. As an active member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Yiorgo participated as an Altar boy, past Vice President of GOYA and church basketball. Yiorgo was selfless when it came to his family and friends, and many people have been touched by his light. Yiorgo was full of love and laughter and could make an entire room happy with his contagious smile. During this difficult time we ask that everyone cherish the good memories they have had with Yiorgo. Our family is very touched by the amount of love and support from the Munster, St. Demetrios and Indiana State communities. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to establish a memorial fund in Yiorgo’s name.

I do not get the extraordinary honor to say that I knew Yiorgo personally. I heard of him through choir however and got to see a goofy side of him as my aid in beginning choir this past school year. He was always cracking jokes, making us all laugh and smile. A day was never dull in his presence. His passing was one that shocked and moved us all, and I'm terribly sorry for the family's loss. One thing that my choir director told us during this difficult week stuck with me. It was that in times like these, life may seem very unfair. You may be sad, depressed, or even angry and that unfortunately is the sorrowful part of this whole step. Yet, there's a certain beauty to these tough times and it is that it brings us all together. We all love Yiorgo unconditionally and have this beautiful unity through him that will never fade. This is what we need to focus on. It's not going to be easy, but it's what's worth it and that's all that really matters. We need to remember that Yiorgo is still here with us, and we should focus on remembering the happy times we shared with him. My heart goes out to his family and may God comfort you during these difficult times.

When we moved to Munster 8 years ago, we would hear stories of Yiorgo from our son, who was a classmate of his. He would come home and tell us the funny things that Yiorgo said or did that day.
