Carl Erik Lundin, age 79, of Munster, IN; formerly of Chicago (Hegewisch), IL; passed away at
dawn on Sunday May 21, 2023. Carl is survived by his son David (Erin) Lundin, grandsons Logan
and Elliott Lundin of Woodridge, IL; and his loving partner of many years, Elizabeth (Betty)
Rudnick of Munster, IN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Seifert Lundin in 1991; his
parents Erik and Margaret (nee Schoettler) Lundin, his dear cousin Megan Paxton, and his
beloved cat Dallara.
Carl was a graduate of George Washington High School and Calumet College of St. Joseph.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in South Korea during the Vietnam War,
attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was a retiree of People’s Gas in Chicago, where he worked for over thirty years.
A lifelong “foodie”, Carl enjoyed cooking and finding new restaurants. He loved traveling and
was particularly fond of visiting Door County, Wisconsin. Carl also spent his time listening to all
types of music, going to the theater, reading, and hiking. He was a die-hard White Sox fan and
held season tickets for the Chicago Bears for over 35 years.
He was a born conversationalist who could happily sit for hours and exchange stories with family, friends, and even strangers. One of Carl’s favorite places was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he witnessed, and even took part in, numerous Indy 500 races. He was a team member for Cheever Racing in 2002 and Panther Racing in 2003 and 2004, and he served on the board of the Indy Racing
League Crew from 1998-2004. He was awarded “Man of the Year” by the Indy Racing League in
2003 for his dedication to the teams and his various philanthropic efforts.
Carl belonged to the Studebaker National Museum, Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society,
Harry A. Miller Club, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, and the Vasa Lodge.
He was very proud of his Swedish heritage. He regularly supported many charitable organizations, such as the Share Foundation, Honor Flight – Chicago, Nature Conservancy, IN; the Dakota Indian Foundation, the Independent Cat Society in Westville, IN; Humane Indiana, and Best Friends Animal Society.
Carl will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 8th at Kish Funeral Home in Munster, IN from
10:00 am – noon.
