Dr. IIwoong W. Chang, age 82 of Schererville, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Young Zin Chang; sons, Gene (Eileen) Chang and David Chang; daughter, Elizabeth (J.B.) Joo; grandchildren, Marcus, Carter, Tyler, Sophia, Elijah and Tobey.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at KISH FUNERAL HOME 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Interment will be private. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service.
Dr. Ilwoong W. Chang was born on July 13, 1942 in Kyunbook, South Korea. He became a U.S. citizen in 1976. Dr. Chang was a 1966 graduate of Yonsei Medical School in Seoul, South Korea. The following years, from 1967 to 1970 he served in medical missions in rural South Korea. He was appointed rank of Lieutenant Naval Medical Officer and was the Medical Officer for the Vietnam War that took place in 1969. Dr. Chang completed his Internal Medicine residency at Wayne State University Hospital in 1974 in Detroit, MI and went on to complete his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL in 1976. He completed several teaching and lectureship roles at the University of Illinois and Indiana University Northwest. Dr. Chang was highly involved in leadership roles with Community Hospital in Munster, IN and St. Catherines Hospital in East Chicago, IN. He also served as President of Lake County Medical Society, President of the 10th District of the Indiana State Medical Association and Chairman of the Board of Lake County Medical Society of Indiana. Dr. Chang was a practicing Gastroenterologist in Northwest Indiana for 4 decades.
Dr. Chang enjoyed golfing, singing and especially loved spending time with family and friends.
