Irene Krasowski (nee Michal), age 86, of Hammond Passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2016. She is survived by her husband Harry; son, Stephen Krasowski; daughter, Elaine (companion Frank Kowal) Drasowski; sisters, Margie Fowler, Augustine Sandlin; four grandchildren, Stephen (fiancée Erin Babb) Krasowksi II, Katie (Doug) Krasowski-Thorne, Jason (Katie Whiting) Krasowski, and Sonya (Jerry) Krasowski-McCormack. Preceded in death by her parents Victor and Sophia Michal; sister, Virginia Yankauskas; brother, Victor Michal Jr. and son Jamie Krasowski and his wife Donna Young-Krasowski Irene was born April 5, 1929 at home to Sophia and Victor Michal (Victor was founder of Broadway Auto Sales in East Chicago, Indiana). Irene graduated from Hammond Tech High School, Class of 1947. She married the love of her life, Harry, On November 6, 1948. She was a devoted wife and homemaker. She loved embracing her Polish heritage. On Holidays she always cooked and baked traditional Polish food. She was an amazingly talented woman. Playing the clarinet and piano plus having a beautiful soprano voice to sing. She belonged to many groups to use her voice. The included Our Lady of Perpetual Help Choir, Polish Millennium Choir 1966-1968, US Steel Choir and the Vocal Ensemble. She was a devout Catholic and belonged to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Hessville. In the day she could be seen at Mass wearing one of her many lovely hats with the latest of ladies fashions. She belonged to the Rosary Society for over 60 years. Irene was a volunteer Girl Scout Leader Troop #359 for 10 years and is a lifetime member of Girl Scouting since 1945.Irene joined the General Federation of Women in 1947. It was called Lucilla at the time. She continued her philanthropics all her life. She held many offices for the Hammond branch, the District branch, the Regional branch, also belonging to the Great Lakes branch and the Big Ten branch. She also held the chairmanship of the Arts and Music for the state of Indiana for 12 years. She continued her GFW service till her passing. Irene was awarded the Athena Award in 1987, from the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, for her extensive volunteer work. Irene loved traveling and dancing with her husband. Together she took 34 cruises all over the world. Her favorite travel was to Rome to have a blessing by Pope John Paul II. Her fondest joy was singing Ave Maria and the Lord’s Prayer for many nieces, nephews and friends weddings. The family would like to acknowledge the support and compassionate care of Chris, Melissa and Kelly from the Hospice of the Calumet Area. There were many daily “care givers” Teresa Gerlak, all the Fowler women, friends and family. Thanks to everyone for their prayer, words of comfort, flowers, thoughtful expressions, cards, food and caring and sharing. Our prayer is that God in his infinite wisdom will abundantly bless each of you. In Irene’s honor sing, sing, sing. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 2:00-8:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Thursday from 9:30-10:00 am at the church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 7132 Arizona Ave. Hammond, IN. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN.
