John A. Hrej, 71 of Highland, IN passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Brandenburg); daughter, Nicolette (Andrew) Martino; son, Edward (Kim) Hrej; sister, Diane (Raymond) Hernandez; and his faithful companion “Rocky”.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, IN.

John proudly served aboard the USS Benjamin Stoddard in Da Nang during the Vietnam War and was a former member of American Legion Allied Post 369 in East Chicago. He loved his backyard pool, campfire and camping at Yogi Bear Camp Ground in Plymouth, IN and most of all dancing with his wife.

Memorial contributions to Hospice of the Calumet Area in his memory would be appreciated.

Patty, I'm so sorry for your loss. You are to young to be losing your spouse but we all know it's not our decision. You have taken care of and lost three very important people in your life, mom, dad and now John. I am unable to be there but have you in my thoughts. Love, Cindy

I'm very sorry for the passing of John,my condolences to the family.I worked with John at Metra Railroad at the 47th St. & Wentworth Ave.site.John was a great guy to work with & had a really good,easy going, fun-loving personality! There was like just a handfull of guys who could really make me laugh like John with his good natured kidding around with a good disposition & at the same time being a real good worker.

I worked with John for many years, he was a real pain in the butt to work with. When he retired all of my pipes on the locomotives breathed a sigh of relief. That they would be safe. John was a good friend, he will be missed.

My brother in law who could probably have done a marathon biking. Your strong legs your incredible mind spot on memory. It was a pleasure knowing you for all the years I was blessed.
