John L. Ostrowski, 82 of Munster, IN passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Michalene (nee Vrabel); daughter, Jacqueline Ostrowski; son, John (Carolyn) Ostrowski; grandchildren, Alyson (Isaac Issa), Adam Eickleberry, Anthony and Chloe Ostrowski; great grandsons, Nasser and Nile Issa; brother-in-law, Patrick (Yuvon) Vrabel, and sister-in-law, Eileen (Bill) Abner; several nieces and nephews, including George Ostrowski of Hinsdale, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wanda and Jozef Ostrowski.

 

 Visitation will be on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 3:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 3:30 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Saturday from 9:30-10:00 am at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Thomas More Church, 8501 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL.

 

 John served his community as a pharmacist in the area. He was a man of integrity and enjoyed helping people in the pharmacy with his long-time co-worker Terri. He worked for Walgreens and CVS during his career. He graduated from St. Mary’s Orchard Lake High School in Michigan and from Purdue University. John loved watching Purdue basketball and football “Boiler Up,” and the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks. He also enjoyed walleye fishing. Memorial contributions to Hospice of the Calumet Area or the Carmelite Fathers in his memory would be appreciated.

My dear uncle John (Jashou), we had years of fun growing up together living only 2 doors apart of one another in Whiting. Our friends would always joke that I should be calling you uncle. It seemed strange since I was your senior by 2.5 years. People would be interested to know how new families came to be created in post World War II Europe. My grandpa, your to be daddy, lost his wife in the late 1930's. Somewhere in the late 30's he traveled to Poland. There he met your mother and they married and returned to the USA to live. On November 24, 1940 you popped up in the world. As we grew up and interacted, I felt that I should be the boss of what we are going to do. Since I was born June 16,1938, I had seniority. But if you were cranky, you would remind me that you had the familial title of "uncle" and therefore you were in charge. In real life you and I never had issues with the title business, but we had fun kidding with our friends about your title of Uncle. In closing I would state that all in my immediate family; daughter Maria Harvey (Ostrowski), husband Dave Harvey and grandsons Sean and Christopher, Son David Ostrowski and wife Karen will all miss your spirit and feel that a stand of 10 trees will help perpetuate your soul into eternity.
