Mary M. Silvasi, age 84, a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, passed away on October 1, 2025 at Hartsfield Village LTC where she had been a resident for just over a year. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Whiting and George Rogers Clark High School. Mary then attended Indiana State University where she made lifelong friends with Joy, Brenda and Helen. She joined the Sigma Kappa Sorority and graduated in 1963 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Mary taught at Washington Irving Elementary School in Hammond for 45 years, primarily first grade. She later attained her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana State University. In her younger years Mary participated in many crafts; crocheting, sewing, macrame, and ceramics. Mary and her friend Nancy Koeselke owned a ceramics shop on 119th St in Whiting for many years. Throughout her life Mary spent several hours volunteering in different ways: singing in the choir and teaching CCD at Sacred Heart Church, assisting with masses at the Munster Med Inn and Hartsfield Village and in various ways at St. Thomas More Church.
Mary is survived by her younger sister Nancy Bubala of Dyer, sister-in-law Diana Silvasi, niece Angela (David) Mier, nephews Matthew Bubala, Robert (Anne) Silvasi, John Silvasi, and David (Sherry) Silvasi. Great Nieces and Nephews: Casey Bubala, Thomas (Char) Mier, Ben (Tori) Mier, Amy (fiance Patrick) Bubala, John Mier, Matthew Mier (fiancé Emilee), Jack Bubala, Bryan Bubala, Michael Bubala, Anna Bubala, Tommy Bubala and Great-Great Nephew Reese Mier. She is predeceased by her great nephew Jeffrey Mier, nephew Michael Bubala, and brother Tony Silvasi.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Thomas More Church 8501 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. There will be no visitation prior and cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the library at Washington Irving Elementary School 4727 Pine Ave. Hammond, IN 46327 ( Please write “Library donation in memory of M Silvasi” on the memo line
