Mr. Richard Elmer Herrmann passed away peacefully, wife by his side, on July 25, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elaine (nee Uhrin); son, Scott (Staci) Herrmann; daughter Kristin (Dave) Ratz; 8 grandchildren Kaitlyn (Andrew)Holton, Michelle (Marc) Mrozinski, Madeline, Charlotte Herrmann; Liam, Amanda, Nadia, Obi-Wan (grand-dog) Ratz; 5 great grandchildren Carter, Lillian, Colton, Adalynn, Waylon (Mrozinski). He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lucille Herrmann; son, infant Herrmann, nephew Jason Uhrin.
Richard was born in Hammond, Indiana, grew up in East Chicago and attended St. Stans grade school and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Upon graduation, he entered an apprenticeship then went on to proudly serve in the US Army from 1961 to 1967 as Medical Specialist. After Military Service, one night while he and his friends hung out a gas station, he met his best friend, the love of his life, Elaine.
Richard had a talent to fix and create just about anything whether metal, wood or otherwise with his hands and a few tools. He enjoyed the
mechanics he learned and applied that to his lifelong joy of being a mechanic. His mechanical experience ranged from passenger cars at the
Chevy Dealership to Industrial Mechanics where he retired from Inland/US Steel as a Master Mechanic for large mobile equipment. Richard was a family man; when not working, Richard devoted his time to helping the family, he supported the kids while mom went back to school to achieve her BA from Purdue University. To some he could be considered the original Mr. Mom, to mom he was her biggest support.
Richard loved to garden; he had a green thumb which resulted in bountiful amounts of vegetables. His was known for his tomatoes and his famous hot pepper spice which he crafted from the dozens of varieties of peppers he grew, dried and blended.
Richard led and served, he’d be the first to stop what he was doing to come and help family, friends, neighbors. He ensured you knew you were welcomed in their home and threw amazing parties.
Richard was an active member of the American Legion Post 369.
