He was preceded in death by his parents Rogelio Sr. and Maria Luisa, brother Alejandro “Alex” and his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Villalobos.
Rogelio was born in Jacona, Michoacán, Mexico on November 2, 1945. A dozen years later, he and his family moved to Redwood City, California, spending two years in the Golden State before eventually settling in Chicago. Inquisitive and full of wonder, Rogelio began a lifelong love of learning from an early age, seizing every opportunity to learn about the world, and history in particular. He believed in and personified the American Dream. He worked and studied hard, and was drafted into the Army, bravely serving in Vietnam before he was a citizen, using the GI Bill to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.
He was a high school teacher and assistant principal for Chicago Public Schools for more than 30 years. He taught social studies and history to young immigrant students in Spanish and English and welcomed multicultural students into his classroom from all over the world. He understood their struggles, shared in their hopes for the future and worked tirelessly to help thousands of students succeed.
An avid reader and master gardener, he was also an enthusiastic craftsman who took great pride and pleasure in building and repairing things with his hands.
At his side, always, was the love of his life, Elizabeth. Together they raised four children, providing them with a loving home and an excellent example of love, devotion, and virtue. Their favorite place to be was in each other’s company, whether at the family dinner table or their travels together around the world.
