William (Bill) J. Carraher, age 72, passed away peacefully with his loving wife and
children by his side on January 7th, 2024. He was born on January 12th, 1951 in Oak
Park, Illinois. Bill adored his surviving wife of 48 years, Donna, (nee Buck), and was
immensely proud as the father of Katie (Jon) Harris, and Brian (Amanda Vizek)
Carraher. Devoted Gramps of Grace, Caroline and Evan Harris; eldest sibling to
brothers Bob, John, Tom, Jim, and sister Mary; brother-in-law to Carol, Jim, Ron, Ken
and Marilyn; caring uncle to 22 nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and
nephews. Preceded in death by son Robert, father William J. Carraher Sr., mother
Mary M. Carraher (nee Schumann), father-in-law Robert A. Buck and mother-in-law
Jean E. Buck (nee Blanchong).
Bill was raised in Oak Park and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in
1969. He later completed his B.S. in Industrial Supervision from Purdue University
Calumet. He and Donna met on a double blind date, where Bill was not “her”
date.
They married in 1975 and began to build their life together in Park Forest, Illinois. The
couple eventually moved to Indiana to finish Bill’s bachelor’s degree, and after
graduation, he worked as a quality control specialist for Sherwin Williams. When
they started their family in 1981, Bill moved to part-time and eventually became a
stay-at-home dad. Deeply involved in the Munster Community, he volunteered at
Market Day events and the Girl Scouts. As a passionate father, Bill continued to stay
active with his children’s interests by becoming the Vice President of Munster Girls
Softball, and worked tirelessly as a groundskeeper for Munster Little League. He
continued his community involvement by joining the Town of Munster’s recruitment
committee for several years. Bill spent countless hours as a volunteer and 4th
Degree Knight of Columbus at St. Thomas More Church. With close friend Gene
Barker, they helped initiate the Christmas Tree lot sales for the church. Bill became
the “Sweet Corn Guy” at the annual summer Fun Days. He loved spending time with
his family, and prior to his illness spent the early years of retirement traveling the
world with his wife, children and grandchildren.
For those who are interested in paying their final respects, a visitation will be held on
Sunday, January 14th, 2024 from 12:00-4:00pm with words of remembrance at 3:00
