Marie, condolences to your family and you. I was fortunate to have spent memorable time as a friend and colleague with Alberto during his time at the University of New Mexico. He made valuable contributions to the economics department and to the university. Faculty and students benefitted from his scholarly work, teaching, and mentoring. It was always rewarding to talk economics with Alberto. Every year, Pat and I looked forward to seeing him at the AEA-ASHE meetings. Alberto will be very missed, Richard Santos, UNM, and Pat Seitz, CNM, ABQ.

Marlin Glenn Hankin Jr left a message on January 30, 2025:
Prior to you, I had no interest in Economics nor Finance. This is coming from a mindset that was difficult to change but you showed me otherwise. You were so passionate about what you were teaching that you inspired me to open my mindset to new things and now it's one of my favorite subjects but what I felt you gave me was not the knowledge, but the gift of passion for learning. You showed me that there is more to life than what you know and there is so much more out there that you can learn. You taught me that if you are the smartest man in the room, you were in the wrong room. To hear of this passing deeply saddened me and made me wish that I had reached out to you more often than I already did but I will always remember and treasure each and every single teaching you ever gave me over our short time together. Although our time together was short, it was one of the most influential and thought provoking times I've ever had in my life. You are not truly gone as you will forever live on in my memory. Every time I research Econ and Fina, I always thought of you and the team we had way back when. You will never be truly gone. You will remain with me, with your family, and with everyone that had the opportunity to meet you. Meeting you and talking with you was truly an experience in and of itself. The way you carried yourself, the way you conducted business, and the way you showed compassion for others proved to me that you truly were a professional, a family man, and most importantly, a friend. I'll see you down the road brother. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Alberto was a wonderful colleague, mentor and friend. I am grateful for Alberto’s support and advice in the economics profession, and I know he did the same for so many others. It was a privilege to work with him on his edited book with Marie Mora on Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, another research project on Puerto Rican migration, and more recently as a member of the ASHE board. Alberto made outstanding professional achievements, but he was always humble and wanted to share with others the steps to a successful career. He was outgoing, cheerful and funny. He gave me great travel tips, especially to Mexico. I will miss him!!
