Bette J. Smith, 82, of Highland, IN passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2014. She is survived by her son, Geary (Lynn) Smith of Lisle, IL; daughter, Sharon (Tim Sheeran) Smith of Chesterton, IN; grandchildren, Erik (Tina) Smith, Geary (Laura) Smith, Megan (Eric) Stoffel and Kathleen Sheeran; great granddaughter, Ella Smith; brother-in-laws, Richard Smith of Merrillville, IN and Robert Waterstraat of Dyer, IN; sister-in-law, Ruth Smith of Hammond, IN; loving nieces and nephews; preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert J. Smith; sister, Nyeita Waterstraat; parents, Rudolph Miller and Mary Story; brother-in-law, Ray Smith and sister-in-law Dolores Smith.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Highland, 8727 Delaware Ave. Highland, IN with Rev. Linda Skaggs officiating. Private interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN.
Bette was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Highland and member of the Bell Choir. She was a volunteer at Meals on Wheels and Hospice of the Calumet Area. Bette retired from the Highland School system as the Merkley School Librarian. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice of the Calumet Area or the First Presbyterian Church of Highland in her memory would be appreciated.
