God graciously gave Carmen Casillas Hinojosa over 89 years to praise and honor her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which she did with great joy. Carmen was called on December 12, 2008 to enter the home He had prepared for her. She will be reunited with her husband, Juan Hinojosa, her beloved grandmother, Mercedez G. Casillas and her devoted Tia Jesuscita Serna and other loved ones. When Carmen was asked how many children she had, she would respond: two daughters, Adela (Bill) Brietzke and Mercy (Josh) Soto and one precious son. Robert Hinojosa. She loved her children but a special place in her heart was for her grandchildren: Laura (Ted) Pereda, Joshua John Soto, Amy Brietzke, Juan A. Hinojosa, Sarah (Dr. Charles) Asher and David Hinojosa. Very special to Carmen was her former daughter in law, Rose Hinojosa. Carmen was raised by her grandmother in the home of Jesuscita Serna along with her cousins, Lupe Montez (deceased), Louis C. Serna (deceased), Peter C. Serna, Annie Raso and Adolfo “Fito” Serna. Her loving and devoted cousins, Maria Alvarez, Luz Ceja and Alfonso Ceja (deceased) were special to her. Many remember Carmen as the children’s Sunday School teacher at Templo Bethel, Latin American Council of Christian Churches in the Harbor side of East Chicago, Indiana. Carmen and her Tia Jesuscita would gather children all over Indiana Harbor and bring them to Sunday School. She loved being with children. After her husband died in 1967, Carmen finished high school. She earned a teaching degree from St. Joseph College. She taught at Franklin Elementary. She later worked for the East Chicago Housing Authority. After retirement, she felt her mission was to minister to the shut-ins and the elderly. She would visit them in their homes, senior citizen facilities and the hospitals. Fond memories of Carmen can be shared with the family on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. (next to Fitness Pointe), Munster, IN, from 1:00-8:00 PM. There will be an English speaking praise worship at 5:30 PM and a Spanish speaking praise worship at 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:00 AM from the funeral home. Officiants will be Rev. Arnulfo Cantu and Rev. Ricardo Casillas from the Latin American Council of Christian Churches. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made to Templo Bethel, 3411 Deodor St. East Chicago, IN 46312, in Carmen’s memory.
