Charles “Charlie” Patrick McLaughlin (July 10, 1951 – May 30, 2024) of Hammond, IN passed on to be with his Lord while surrounded by those he loved most.
Charlie was a kind and gentle man with a dry sense of humor. A dedicated Hoosier, he attended Indiana University with a focus in fine ales and fine arts – talents he continued to foster and share with others throughout his life.
He grew up with a strong sense of family and reveled in his Irish and Polish heritage, the oldest of a generation of tight-knit siblings and cousins known as “Hazel’s Kids.”
Charlie was a devout Catholic and revered for his deep and earnest faith, committing himself to a life of service which included volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Church in Hammond and serving as a 4th Degree member of The Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight of Unity Council 726) and legacy member of the Hammond Optimist Club (past President).
He enjoyed a 35-year career with Community Hospital’s Purchasing Department where he worked alongside a wonderful team of co-workers and forged lifelong friendships.
Charlie married Candy (nee Riddle) in July of 1982. They had two tall, creative sons Phillip (Katelyn) of Munster and John of New York, NY and Munster. Charlie and Candy were blessed with three grandchildren: Charles, Olsen, and Faye, who frequently brought joy and laughter into their lives.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father Phil, mother Maggie, step-father Bill Fitzpatrick, sister Kimmie, many adored aunts, uncles, cousins, and Gunny the Turtle. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he is survived by his brothers Brian (Linda) and James (Carol), and beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Please raise a pint of Guinness in Charlie’s honor, “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.”
