Charles W. Simpson, age 89, of Highland, IN, and formerly of Munster, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Belle; children, Judith (James) Kerins, Charles W. Simpson (Jr.), Douglas E. (Caryn Slosser, fiancée) Simpson, Nancy L. (Chris) Malo, Mary Lou (deceased) Benoit; and grandchildren, Anthony (Erin) and Thomas Kerins; Rachael (Terry), Katherine, Bryan Simpson; Amy and Eric (Kathryn) Malo, and their nine great-grandchildren. Charles was one of seven children of Charles and Agnes Mae Simpson of Hebron, IN where the family farmed. He entered the Merchants Marine Corp prior to the Korean conflict until the tragic death of both his parents. He then relocated to Pittsburgh to live with family and then attended the University of Pittsburgh. It was there that he met his wife Nancy and married in 1951. He then entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Charles and Nancy relocated to Munster to be closer to his brother, Harold Simpson, joining the Munster Police force in 1957 whereby he served 20 years retiring as a sergeant in 1977. In his retirement, he worked many years with Milne Supply, enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing, and square dancing with the Buttons and Bows Club. He and Nancy were active members of the Ridge United Methodist Church. He was active in the lives of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and Nancy lived in Munster until 2014 when they relocated to Highland. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Ridge United Methodist Church, 8607 Columbia Ave, Munster, IN 46321 with a 10:00 a.m. visitation followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Charles’ name to the Ridge United Methodist Church or to the Hospice of the Calumet Area.
