Chester “Chet” R. Griggs, 82, of Lansing, IL passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted Soulmate of 17 years, Ruth Iwaniec. He was the proud Dad of his loving sons, Daniel (Angel) and Jack (Ruth) Griggs; daughter-in-law, Sandy Griggs; grandchildren, Amy (David) Graham, Emily, Jacob, Rachel, Kyle Griggs and Brittney (Ryan) Trevino; his cherished sister, Mary (Gene) Kennard and brother, Donald; four great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley and his son, Ray. Chet was born in Evansville, IN on August 25, 1932, He lived in Hamilton, Ohio from the age of 7 until graduating from high school. He spent 17 years at Blaw-Knox working his way up to General Foreman and Head of Maintenance. He then started in sales at Viking Engineering and became Superintendent. He also worked for 14 years at Lansing Public Works before retiring. He spent many years as a Little League Umpire. He was involved in politics and held many positions on various Lansing Boards. Chet was a master wood craftsman. He built many cherished pieces for family and friends. He was also a very knowledgeable handyman always helping family, friends and neighbors. Chet was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Knock Church, serving as a Lector and Usher. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 2:00-8:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 9:15 AM from the funeral home with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Knock Church, Calumet City, IL. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Calumet Humane Society, 421 45th Ave. Munster, IN. would be appreciated.
