Christine J. Nisiewicz (Obrębska), age 90, of Munster, Indiana passed away on Monday, June 15,  2026. Born in Eastern Poland to a large family, she immigrated to America in the late 1960’s.  She had two children and shortly after she lost her husband to a work accident leaving her with a two and four year old. She did not speak English, did not drive, and had none of her family in the United States.  She invited her youngest sister Maria to the join her who ended up making America her home as well.  Christine was a lab technician in Poland. While raising her children she worked various jobs until her children graduated high school. She then got a job at Munster Community Hospital in the dietary department where she worked until she retired at 77.

Preceded in death by husband, John Nisiewicz; parents, Weronika Obrębska and Józef Obrębski; brothers, Felix Obrębski and Eugeniusz Obrębski; and sisters, Lucyna Grzybowska and Maria Mizerski. She is survived by her son, George Nisiewicz (Erin); daughter, Cathy Lewandowski; grandsons Joren and Jake Nisiewicz; granddaughter Jessica (Thomas) Pope; nephew and niece, Danny Mizerski and Sandy (Christopher) Wojtaszek; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Poland.

During her life, Christine most enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, painting, doing word searches, and going to the casino. She will be remembered fondly as a strong, kind, feisty, and funny person. She was known to many by as “Babcia”. She was deeply loved and will be missed greatly. Her spirit will live on in our memories.

Visitation will be will be held on Friday, June 19 2026 at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm with a Vigil service at 4:30 pm and again on Saturday, at the church from 9:30 am until the 10:00 am Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 20, 2026  at 10:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church 8501 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN with Fr. Michael Yadron officiating. Interment to follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL
