Chris was born on May 15, 1953 in Hammond, Indiana. She attended St. Casimir Catholic School, graduated at the top of her class from Hammond Technical Vocational High School in1971, and continued her studies at Indiana State University. Her career at Franciscan Health spanned 34 years, most of which in Administration at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Indiana. It was there that she made some of her most treasured friends. Many of her late nights were spent volunteering as a spiritual companion, where she would visit patients who were in need of company and offer a listening ear, uplifting support and, if open to it, a comforting prayer.
On August 26, 1972, she married a handsome, long haired young man named John and they celebrated in her mother’s backyard under a beautiful willow tree. He was the love of her life and together they went on many adventures in a big green Chevy van all over the United States. They raised many dogs together who were often along for the ride, the most special of all – a Saint Bernard named Betsy.
Their greatest adventure – and Chris’ lifelong dream – was parenthood. Chris was the world’s most magical mom. From homemade Halloween costumes, art projects, and setting up hersewing machine to help outfit entire high school theatre productions, she could do it all. Chris made everyday activities special. Whether it was Saturdays getting Happy Meals, library books and finding new parks; building sand castles at the Indiana Dunes; loading up the car with cousins to go to Finneran Park; or making dandelion crowns in Northgate Park behind the family home, she filled every day with wonder for her two girls. She never missed a single dance recital, choir concert or musical production – and seeing Mom in the first few rows, smiling from ear to ear – meant the world to both her girls and their friends.
There was nothing in the world Chris loved more than her children … except for her grands. Allie, Brynn, Layla and Isaiah made her world go round and brought her an indescribable amount of joy during her 16 years as a Nana. She never hesitated to get on the floor to play an endless number of Barbies, build impressive train tracks for Thomas, construct complete Magnatile cities, or play the newest board game. She never said no to a sleepover, where the grands would all pile into her bed somehow always convince her to watch just one more movie. She never minded messes made in the kitchen, as baking together was a treasured time for all. Chris’ creativity shined in every birthday cake, where her exquisite creations masterfully captured each unique interest of the birthday child.
Her home was the place where all the friends and family gathered. There was rarely a weekend without extra cousins or friends camped out in her living room. Whether it was having the “good snacks,” getting up early to make enough pancakes for the entire sleepover, or having a gift on Christmas Eve for everyone who stopped by, she made everyone who entered her home feel safe, welcome, and included.
But above all things, Chris will be remembered by all for living like Jesus. Faith was the foundation of who she was. Chris’ words and actions reflected the character of Christ to those around her each and every day. Her mercy, patience, and grace were the embodiment of God’s love. Although her family here on Earth will miss her every day, we know she will forever shine in the light of His glory.
