With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Consuelo Quiroga Soto, of Dyer, Indiana who died peacefully at home on May 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 87 years old.

Born in Cloete, Coahuila, Mexico on September 3, 1937, Consuelo was raised in nearby Nueva Rosita by her devoted parents, Ponciano Quiroga and Juanita Rodríguez. She was one of nine children and often reminisced and shared fond memories of her vibrant and close-knit family. Her siblings—Jesús Quiroga, Margarita De La Cruz, Esperanza Falcón, Alicia Mata, Juan Quiroga, María Elena Soto, Dora Aida Delgado, and Ponciano Quiroga—were an enduring source of love, laughter, and connection throughout her life.

In October 1962, Consuelo married the love of her life, Ricardo F. Soto, beginning a lifelong romance marked by joy and devotion.  They loved dancing, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, and building a life rooted in love and shared dreams. In 1965, she joined Ricardo in the United States, and together they made a home in Calumet City, Illinois, where they raised their four children: Ricardo (Catherine) Soto, Marisa (Michael) Thompson, Maribel (Michael) Mikolajczyk, and Velia Soto.  Consuelo dedicated her life to her family.  A proud and loving homemaker, she poured her heart into raising her children and later found immense joy in her role as a grandmother. To her seven grandchildren—Troy (Ashley) Piccinini, Jack (Alexandra) Thompson, David Thompson, Ricardo (Savannah) Soto, Haviland Soto, Elizabeth Thompson, and Gabriella Soto—she was affectionately known as Abuelita. She cherished her time with them, doting on them, celebrating their milestones, and cheering them on at their sporting events. Her warmth, guidance, and boundless love as Abuelita will forever be treasured.

Gifted with talented hands and a generous spirit, Consuelo was a skilled seamstress who could sew anything from curtains, tablecloths and bedspreads to clothes and costumes. Her work was both beautiful and practical, and she was always willing to help a friend or neighbor with alterations. She spent many peaceful hours tending to her flowers and enjoyed the company of her closest friends.

Though she arrived in the United States speaking only Spanish and far from her family, Consuelo embraced her new community with courage and grace. She became a beloved figure in her neighborhood and church, known for her kindness, warmth, and incredible cooking. Her tamales and tinga were legendary—made with love and shared generously at family gatherings and parish celebrations.   She was deeply involved in her faith and parish life at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Calumet City and All Saints Church in Hammond, Indiana. Together with her husband Ricardo, Consuelo was instrumental in establishing the annual celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Andrew’s—a tradition that brings together faith, culture, and community.  In 1999, Consuelo moved to Dyer, Indiana, where she became a member of St. Maria Goretti Church continuing her devotion to faith, and celebrated with her husband Ricardo their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaies.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years; her four children, their spouses; her seven cherished grandchildren and their spouses.  She is also survived by her loving sisters Alicia, María Elena, and Dora; her brother Ponciano; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Consuelo’s life was a testament to love, faith, resilience, and generosity. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion to family and joyful connection. Her memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew her —and for her grandchildren, Abuelita will always be a guiding light of love.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church 500 Northgate Dr. Dyer, IN with a 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass offered by Reverend Leo Gajardo. Interment will be private.  Visitation will be on Friday, at KISH FUNERAL HOME 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN from 3:00 pm. to 7:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

Con profundo cariño y profundo pesar, anunciamos el fallecimiento de Consuelo Quiroga Soto, de Dyer, Indiana, quien falleció en paz en su hogar el 21 de mayo de 2025, rodeada del amor de su familia. Tenía 87 años.

Nacida en Cloete, Coahuila, México, el 3 de septiembre de 1937, Consuelo fue criada en la cercana Nueva Rosita por sus devotos padres, Ponciano Quiroga y Juanita Rodríguez. Fue una de nueve hijos y a menudo recordaba y compartía con cariño los recuerdos de su vibrante y unida familia. Sus hermanos —Jesús Quiroga, Margarita De La Cruz, Esperanza Falcón, Alicia Mata, Juan Quiroga, María Elena Soto, Dora Aida Delgado y Ponciano Quiroga— fueron una fuente inagotable de amor, risas y conexión a lo largo de su vida.

En octubre de 1962, Consuelo se casó con el amor de su vida, Ricardo F. Soto, iniciando un romance para toda la vida, marcado por la alegría y la devoción. Amaban bailar, escuchar música, pasar tiempo con familiares y amigos, y construir una vida basada en el amor y los sueños compartidos. En 1965, se unió a Ricardo en los Estados Unidos, y juntos formaron un hogar en Calumet City, Illinois, donde criaron a sus cuatro hijos: Ricardo (Catherine) Soto, Marisa (Michael) Thompson, Maribel (Michael) Mikolajczyk y Velia Soto. Consuelo dedicó su vida a su familia. Una ama de casa orgullosa y amorosa, puso su corazón en la crianza de sus hijos y más tarde encontró una inmensa alegría en su papel de abuela. Para sus siete nietos, Troy (Ashley) Piccinini, Jack (Alexandra) Thompson, David Thompson, Ricardo (Savannah) Soto, Haviland Soto, Elizabeth Thompson y Gabriella Soto, era conocida cariñosamente como Abuelita. Apreciaba su tiempo con ellos, mimándolos, celebrando sus hitos y animándolos en sus eventos deportivos. Su calidez, guía y amor infinito como Abuelita serán atesorados por siempre.

Con manos talentosas y un espíritu generoso, Consuelo era una hábil costurera que podía coser cualquier cosa, desde cortinas, manteles y colchas hasta ropa y disfraces. Su trabajo era hermoso y práctico, y siempre estaba dispuesta a ayudar a un amigo o vecino con los arreglos. Pasaba muchas horas tranquilas cuidando sus flores y disfrutaba de la compañía de sus amigos más cercanos.

Aunque llegó a Estados Unidos hablando solo español y lejos de su familia, Consuelo abrazó su nueva comunidad con valentía y gracia. Se convirtió en una figura querida en su vecindario e iglesia, conocida por su amabilidad, calidez y su increíble cocina. Sus tamales y tinga eran legendarios: hechos con amor y compartidos generosamente en reuniones familiares y celebraciones parroquiales. Estuvo profundamente involucrada en su fe y vida parroquial en la Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol en Calumet City y la Iglesia de Todos los Santos en Hammond, Indiana. Junto con su esposo Ricardo, Consuelo fue clave en el establecimiento de la celebración anual de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en San Andrés, una tradición que une fe, cultura y comunidad. En 1999, Consuelo se mudó a Dyer, Indiana, donde se unió a la Iglesia de Santa María Goretti, continuando su devoción a la fe, y celebró con su esposo Ricardo sus aniversarios de bodas número 50 y 60.

Le sobreviven su amado esposo de 62 años; sus cuatro hijos y sus esposas; sus siete queridos nietos y sus esposas. También le sobreviven sus queridas hermanas Alicia, María Elena y Dora; su hermano Ponciano; y numerosos sobrinos, sobrinas y familiares.

La vida de Consuelo fue un testimonio de amor, fe, resiliencia y generosidad. Deja un legado de devoción a la familia y una alegre conexión. Su recuerdo perdura en los corazones de quienes la conocieron, y para sus nietos, Abuelita siempre será un faro de amor.

El funeral se llevará a cabo el sábado 2 de agosto de 2025 en la Iglesia Católica Santa María Goretti, ubicada en 500 Northgate Dr. Dyer, Indiana, con una misa a las 10:00 a. m. ofrecida por el reverendo Leo Gajardo. El entierro será privado. El velatorio será el viernes en la FUNERARIA KISH, ubicada en 10000 Calumet Ave., Munster, Indiana, de 3:00 p. m. a 7:00 p. m., y nuevamente el sábado en la iglesia, de 9:00 a. m. a la misa de las 10:00 a. m.
