David Edward Cole, 85, of Munster, IN passed away August 12, 2023.
Born July 10, 1938 to Clarence and Eva (McNary) Cole, David grew up in Hammond, IN and graduated from Hammond High School in 1956. In 1960 with three partners he purchased Munster Lanes and was a proprietor/owner for 28 years. He also ran a restaurant promotion business for 14 years called The Calumet Supper Club. A few years after leaving the bowling business, he worked for a couple of different funeral home/cemetery businesses.
David served for many community organizations over the years. He was a District Chairman for the Peace Pipe District of the Boy Scouts; served for the Munster Chamber of Commerce; member and chairperson of the local Salvation Army Board of Advisors; member of the Munster Rotary Club serving as President and Chairman of the International Youth Exchange Program; served 20 years on Boards and Commissions for the Town of Munster and was active in the Munster Historical Society.
He was a lifelong member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and served in numerous positions over the years.
David’s favorite hobby was family history/genealogy and he spent countless hours not only on the history of his own family but also for others.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn (Metzger); daughters, Karen (Brian) Elliott of Northwood, OH and Cindy (Chris) Wilkie of Dyer, IN; grandchildren, Taylor (Wes) Hall of Bloomington, IN; Christopher (Dana) Wilkie of LaPorte, IN; Zach Elliott of Norton Shores, MI and Amber Elliott of West Lafayette, IN; great-grandchildren Avery Hall and Raegan Wilkie; sister, Gail Snell and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Eva (McNary) Cole; sister, Betsy Cole and son, Brian Cole.
Visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 2201 Azalea Drive, Highland, IN with Pastor Merlyn Lawrence officiating. Visitation at 10:00am and service to follow at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations to Immanuel United Church of Christ would be appreciated.
