Donald Edward Hall
October 18, 1956 – March 6, 2026
Donald Edward Hall, age 69, passed away on March 6, 2026. A lifelong Midwesterner known for his quiet kindness and steady presence, Don spent his life devoted to his family, his work, and the countless people who relied on his thoughtful advice.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cathy (née Summey); his sons, Eric (Christina) and Adam (Kaitlyn); his mother, Joan; his brother, Jeff (Maria); and his grandchildren, Carmen, Leo, and Andie, with another granddaughter expected in August 2026. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Don was born on October 18, 1956, at Saint Margaret’s Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, and grew up in Calumet City, Illinois. He graduated from Thornton Fractional North High School in 1974 and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Calumet College of Saint Joseph.
Throughout his career, Don worked in finance and banking, bringing reliability and integrity to every role he held. His professional life included positions at Inland Steel, the First National Bank of East Chicago, and service as the City Treasurer of Chicago Heights. He concluded his career as Chief Financial Officer at DeMotte State Bank in DeMotte, Indiana. In 2000, he moved to DeMotte with his family, and in retirement he relocated to Highland, Indiana to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a quiet, kind, and thoughtful man. He had a remarkable ability to listen and offer steady advice, often serving as an unofficial therapist and trusted problem-solver for friends, family, and colleagues alike.
Don especially enjoyed solitary projects and hands-on work. In his spare time he could often be found building, repairing, or creating something new. His hobbies ranged from painting figurines smaller than a fingernail to building an entire car by hand. Over the years he answered countless calls from his sons about home or car repairs. One of his final projects was 3D printing and carefully painting a character for his grandson.
Don’s steady presence, empathy, and willingness to help others made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His family and friends will deeply miss his patience, his quiet humor, and his ability to make people feel heard and understood. The world would be better with more people like him.
