Donald J. Bogue slept peacefully into eternity on April 21, 2014. Born Feb. 2, 1918 in Ogden UT, he grew up near Independence Missouri. He attended Graceland University and Univ. of Iowa, earned his MA at Washington State and completed his PhD at the University of Michigan after serving in the Navy during WW II. After brief positions with the U.S. Census Bureau and the Scripps Foundation, he joined the sociology faculty of the University of Chicago in 1954 where he continued as an active scholar until the time of his death. He published numerous works on migration, family planning, communication, and demographic methodology. He trained many students from around the world. In 2011, he was named Laureate of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population and honored by the Population Association of America of which he was a past president.
He is survived by two loving daughters, Sister Edith Bogue, OSB and Gretchen (Michael) Maguire, his grandchildren Robert Balanoff, Daniel Balanoff, Joseph Maguire and Jennifer Maguire, long-time dear friend Isabel Garcia and her family, and many cousins and nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Jean Mullen Bogue and his three siblings, Florence Hughes, Gertrude VanTuyl, and Delbert Bogue. Funeral arrangements are private.
