Donald Sinclair Powers passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015. He is survived by his wife Margo Powers; daughter, Frankie (Timothy) Fesko; grandchildren, Heather (Michael) Delgado, Donald (Katrina) Fesko, and Timothy Fesko; six great-grandchildren, DJ Fesko, Elizabeth Fesko, Michael Fesko, Stevie Delgado, Charles Delgado and Jacob Delgado. He was preceded in death by his first wife Trena Torrenga Powers. Born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1920, to Rose and George Powers. Mr. Powers graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis and later received his Bachelor of Science Degree, with a major in agriculture, from Purdue University in 1947. He also received Honorary Doctorates from Calumet College of St. Joseph in 1985 and from Purdue University in 1992. Mr. Powers joined the United States Navy in 1941, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and served as a fighter pilot with several night fighter squadrons off various aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Powers was called back to duty during the Korean Conflict and served as a jet fighter pilot and as the skipper of the photo reconnaissance unit aboard the USS Kearsarge. Upon the conclusion of his second tour of duty, he was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Following his graduation from Purdue in 1947, and until his return to military service in 1950, Mr. Powers was employed as an Assistant Agent in the Lake County Agricultural Extension Office where he directed 4H Club activities throughout Lake County. He also served as Secretary of the Lake County Fair Board for a number of years. Upon his return to civilian life, he entered the insurance business and opened the Don Powers Agency, a general insurance firm specializing in commercial business. Mr. Powers had an extensive real estate development background that began in 1960 when he developed a residential subdivision known as Market Square, an addition to the Town of Munster. Subsequent Market Square additions resulted in construction of office and retail space which is now commonly known as Market Square. 1964 marked the beginning of the Fairmeadows Addition to the Town of Munster where Mr. Powers, as the managing partner, created the largest residential development in Munster’s history. That project, when concluded in 1975, included 1700 residential lots, locations for an elementary school, a six acre park, a medical office complex, and a hospital as well as several retail establishments and commercial office buildings. Mr. Powers and four other area developers donated the parcel of land needed to build Community Hospital along with money for site improvements. Mr. Powers was significantly involved with several other residential developments during the 1970’s which included: A 432 apartment complex in Hammond known as Tanglewood Apartments, A 300 residential lot subdivision in Crown Point known as Willow Tree Farms, Twin Creek subdivision in Munster, Briar Ridge Country Club in Dyer/Schererville, Plum Creek in Schererville, Briar Creek Addition to the Town of Munster. In 1970 Mr. Powers was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of Munster Medical Research Foundation, serving as Secretary to the Board. In 1983, he was elected President, and currently served as the CEO of Community Healthcare System. He was instrumental in the development of the Center for Visual and Perfoming Arts and the Veterans War Memorial, both located in Munster, Indiana. As a philanthropist and prominent civic leader, Mr. Powers served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Purdue University for 15 years, eight of which were as President. The Donald S. Powers Computer Education Building of Purdue University Calumet was named in his honor. He personally funded nursing scholarships at Purdue University and Indiana University Northwest. In 1986, several of Mr. Powers’ friends and associates honored him by creating the Donald S. Powers Scholarship Fund at Purdue University Calumet. He served for many years as Director of both the Mercantile National Bank of Indiana and Northwest Indiana Public Service Company. Among his many honors, Mr. Powers received the Northwest Indiana Quality of Life Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the environment, economic development and social equity. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from the Northwest Indiana Small Business Development Center for his entrepreneurial endeavors as an insurance agent and land developer and for his leadership in the development of Community Hospital. He was twice recognized as a Sagamore of the Wabash recipient. Mr. Powers was an avid reader, golfer, gin player, pilot and Purdue fan. He and Margo traveled the world extensively and enjoyed taking his daughter’s family on vacations to foreign countries and to Purdue bowl games whenever they occurred. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 from 2:00-8:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, 11:00 AM at the Munster Christian Reformed Church, 214 Ridge Road, Munster, IN. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to The Cancer Resource Centre, 926 Ridge Road, Munster, IN 46321, would be appreciated.
