Dorothy E. Walker (nee Nelson) age 95, of Highland, IN, formerly of Hammond, IN, born January 12, 1929, passed away April 29, 2024.
She was preceded in death by daughter and son-in-law Denise Walker Fisher and Jim Fisher, parents Clarence and Clara (Thernes) Nelson, brothers Clarence Nelson Jr. and Thomas Nelson.
She is survived by daughter Diane (Bernie) Burczyk of Dyer, IN and son David (Judith) Walker of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, Blair (Mike) Couwenhoven, Brooke (Tommy) Paschen, Alexa Walker, and Adam (Brooke) Walker; four great grandchildren, Chloe, Camden, and Jack Couwenhoven and Stella Paschen.
Dorothy graduated from Hammond High School, class of 1947. She worked from the age of 14 in various jobs at grocery stores, the railroad, and Hammond City Hall. She retired from the lab at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond.
Dorothy enjoyed playing cards with friends for hours, bingo, and an occasional trip to the casino. Most of all she loved keeping up with the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She mastered texting as soon as she received her first iPhone and was much quicker than most of us. She was an avid fan of all sports, especially the Cubs, IU basketball, and Bobby Knight.
Dorothy was adored by her family and will be dearly missed. We are all so thankful that we had her in our lives as long as we did.
Services and interment are private with family at Dorothy’s request.
