Edward T. Hickey Sr. was born on the South Side of Chicago where he attended Mt. Carmel High School. He was an avid, competitive swimmer and lifeguard at Rainbow Beach, and it was there that he met, through friends, Rosemary, his wife of over 60 years. Ed went on to Purdue University, where he participated in their Army ROTC program while studying Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation he married Rosemary and began his career as an engineer, initially working at the Steel Mills south of Chicago. The family grew with four children, Ed Jr, Beth, Susan and Cindy. In the early 70’s he made a bold shift of careers to become a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. Ed became a successful Commodities Trader and started several clearing companies in his over 50 years at the Exchange. He was generous with his knowledge and experience and afforded many new traders an opportunity to get started in the business. Ed was well known on the trading floor for having a dry wit, a great smile and an easy laugh. He loved to read, from history to economics to politics, and was always up for a lively debate. He took his hobbies seriously, became a pilot, got his captains license to complement his love of fishing and sailing, he taught Options Trading at the CBOT, while also continuing, for many years as a student of Spanish language. Ed was a wonderful father, a devoted husband, and a true and loyal friend. Above all he knew how to laugh and have fun and wanted to share that with everyone who knew him.
