Ernest “Ernie” J. Gonzalez was born June 6, 1950. He passed away on August 29, 2023, after complications from a chronic illness. Ernest was born in Chicago to working class Mexican-American parents, Ernest B. and Frances Gonzalez, who preceded him in death. He is a 1968 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. He was the oldest of five children. He went on to work at Republic Steel and later retired from the Cook County Assessor’s Office after 28 years of service as a field inspector. He is survived by his wife Melanie; daughters Luciana; Liliana; and Lorena; son Ernest Gonzalez Jr.; brothers Rey and George; sister Elizabeth Ortiz; brother Richard; granddaughter Alexandria Gabriel; grandson Brian (Vinny) Gabriel; granddaughter Julie Guerrero; grandson Anthony; granddaughter Maya; grandson Sebastian; grandson Cassius; and grandson Isaac. He loved spending time with his family and friends, golfing and following his favorite Chicago sports teams. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Kish Funeral Home starting at 3:00P.M. to 8:00P.M. and on Wednesday September 6, 2023 at St. Maria Goretti Church in Dyer, Indiana from 9:30A.M. to 10:00A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will start at 10:00 A.M. at St. Maria Goretti Church in Dyer, Indiana. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, Illinois following immediately after services. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research at stopsarcoidosis.org.
