Felipe Andrés Hernandez, 34, of Chicago, passed away unexpectedly on April 5, 2024 after a tragic accident.
Born on March 20, 1990 to loving parents Alfred and Irma, Felipe immediately filled the lives of those around him with joy. He discovered his love for cooking and hospitality in high school, through the Hammond Area Career Center – which inspired him to study culinary arts at Kendall College in Chicago. From there, he went on to work at many notable restaurants in Chicago and Michigan, including Greenbush Brewery, Bistro Campagne, The Bedford, Takito Kitchen, and El Che Bar. Most recently, he served as the Chef de Cuisine at Funkenhausen. At the time of his passing, he was about to embark on the next chapter of his career as co-owner of Common Decency / Fever Dream, a highly anticipated bar and restaurant in Chicago. His numerous accomplishments and tireless dedication to his craft will live forever in the mark he left throughout the city of Chicago.
Felipe was a loving cat dad to Kaça, and an Uncle Bro to pets Stanley, Ernie, Carlos, and Pistachio. He adored his friends and family with an unwavering loyalty that truly defined who he was at his core. He loved nature, listening to and playing music, art, poetry, the cold of winter, and the beauty of the desert. He was consistently kind and generous to everyone he met, often going out of his way to make others feel comfortable and welcome – no matter the circumstance. He was a brother to everyone, showing his love through even the smallest of deeds. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh. He was thoughtful and respectful. And he was a firm believer that time has no beginning and no end, and that our energy lives on forever.
His presence is sorely missed and his loss is deeply felt. Felipe is predeceased by his grandfather Alfred, his grandmother Sally, and his childhood best friend Trevor, among others. He is survived by his mother Irma, his father Alfred, his sister Anneliese, his brother Justin, his sister-in-law Kristen, and every person who carries a memory of his impact on their lives.
Services are planned for Sunday, April 14 at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave, Munster, IN 46321. There will be a viewing from 11 am to 3 pm, with a service for all to share memories of Felipe at 2 pm.
After the services at Kish, there will be an informal gathering to celebrate Felipe’s life at 18th Street Distillery, 5417 Oakley Ave, Hammond, IN 46320. If you plan to attend the celebration of life at 18th Street, please text (408) 781-9033 so we can get a rough idea of the number of guests to expect.
