Florence “Flossie” L. Wood

Florence L. “Flossie” Wood, ageless, passed away peacefully in her home, Friday, December 17, 2010. Left to cherish their memories are her family Jim (Foncine) Wood of Fleming Island, FL., Michael (Susan) Wood of Munster, IN, Mary Baughard of Englewood, FL.and Julie Wood; She will be missed by her loving grandchildren, Jim Wood and Jennifer (Mark) Ryder, Dylan, Brandon and Tyler Wood, Shaun, Erik, Christie and Abigail Wood; numerous friends, fellow bridge players and golfers; Born in Salem, IL, Flossie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank W. and Bessie May (Johnston) Roll; sons, John R. Wood and Roy Wood Jr.(Ed) who passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010; sisters, Irma Merritt, Mary Hathaway and Frances Davis; Also preceding her death were special friends, Mary Ellen Hector, Gerry Yates, Pat Lehmann, Patsy Nau, Helen Bomberger, Fuzzie Hopkins and many more to numerous to mention. Cremation service will be private and a memorial celebration of her life and Ed's will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 6635 Hohman Ave. Hammond, IN 46324. Flossie was manager of the Munster License Bureau for many years, retiring at the age of 75. She was a 50+ year member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Hammond. A staunch Republican, she was a former precinct committee woman and as a former member of Woodmar Country Club, she achieved the distinction of being a “Hole in One” winner in 1985. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed the challenges of many afternoon games with various bridge clubs, particularly at Woodmar and Briar Ridge Country Clubs and the homes of many friends. She had a unique sense of humor, was known for her excellent cooking skills and was a strong, independent woman before it became popular to be one. Flossie will be missed by many, but she leaves a legacy of love, friendship and humor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Calumet Area, First United Methodist Church or the Cancer Resource Centre in her memory would be appreciated.
