George F. Obis, Jr., age 59 of Mokena, IL passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. He is survived by his adoring wife, Shirlie (nee Kazmer) Obis; brother, Ted (Caryn); nieces and nephews: Morgan Obis, Tyler Obis, Danelle (Kyle) Walton, Dustin (Megan) Kazmer and Devon Kazmer; great nephew and niece, Reid and Quinn Walton and numerous cousins, relatives and friends. George, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, George, Sr. and Dorothy Obis; sister, Kimberly Obis; grandfather, Theodore Gerrmann, mother-in-law, Ann Kazmer and brother-in-law, Dennis Kazmer.
George, Jr. was born on October 9, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Tinley Park and was high school football standout. He was being actively recruited by numerous colleges when an injury cut his football career short. He entered his apprenticeship with the Pipe Fitters Local 597 in 1981 and became a journeyman in 1985. He met the love of his life (“the boss” as he often referred to her), his wife Shirlie, through friends one fateful night at Kilroy’s. It wasn’t an easy feat to win Shirlie over, but George was never one to back down. Together they created a beautiful life filled with love, their dog and horse children and future plans. Shirlie was the center of his world.
George loved being a pipe fitter was a proud and loyal member of Local Union 597 for over 40 years. He was currently employed as a project manager at AIS. He really thrived on the stress of the big jobs. He also loved hunting and NASCAR. While often straight to the point, George was a giant teddy bear on the inside. He was generous man with his time and talents and will be greatly missed.
The visitation and celebration of his life will be held from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at KISH FUNERAL HOME 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN.

Worked with George at Citgo Oil on major maintenance outages as well as winterization projects on the night shift. Really enjoyed his company and the stories we shared. He was a very knowledgeable man as well as being fair, courteous, funny, and direct. He will be missed. Till we meet again Mr. Obis. God show mercy on your good soul.
