Harriet A. Farkas (nee Bard) died on September 9, 2009. She is survived by sons Steven (Kelly) and Jeffrey of Munster, daughter Beth of Elgin, IL, granddaughters Aren and Abby Farkas, of Munster, sisters, Barbara Bard of Munster and Dr. Geraldine Bard of Buffalo, NY, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by her husband Joseph, parents, Philip and Gertrude Bard, brothers Arnold and Richard Bard.Harriet was born in Chicago, and moved to Gary at age 15. She graduated from Horace Mann High School and Indiana University. She taught kindergarten in the Gary school system for 47 years, retiring from Banneker Achievement Center in 2005. She belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma educational society, Rho Chapter and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. Harriet was a member of Congregation Beth Israel in Munster, CBI Sisterhood, Illiana Hadassah, the Jewish Federation Adult Friendship Club and Prime Timers. Funeral services for Harriet will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. (next to Fitness Pointe) Munster, IN, Rabbi Ben Kramer, officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Interment at Beth El Cemetery, Portage, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations to Congregation Beth Israel, the SHARE Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
