Harriet Elizabeth Colman Shorb passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in Littleton, Colorado. She was 83. Harriet was born on November 1, 1927, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She grew up in the Missouri towns of Farmington, Jackson and Cape Girardeau. She graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School, and in 1949 she graduated from Southeast Missouri State College and began teaching in northwest Indiana. She met Eugene Murray Shorb in Hammond, Indiana, and the two were married on July 14, 1951 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Harriet taught at St. Thomas More School in Munster, Indiana for 17 years. She was very active in her community. She was on the Board of the Samaritan Counseling Center, was a member of Woodmar United Methodist Church, the Chapter CJ PEO Sisterhood, and the Visiting Nurse Foundation, at one time serving as President.Harriet was predeceased by her husband Gene in 1994 and by her daughter Janet Shorb Delmas in 2010. She is survived by her son Thomas, and daughter-in-law Gena and their sons Nathaniel and Matthew, her son William, and daughter-in-law Lisa and their daughters Sarah and Marian, and her son-in-law Hartmut Delmas and his daughter Rebecca and son Kai. She is also survived by her brother William Colman of Jackson, Missouri, her sister Geraldine Dudley of St. Louis, Missouri, her brother-in-law William Shorb of Port Charlotte, Florida, and several nieces and nephews.Harriet’s core belief was that we were here on earth to create and develop relationships with people. Her daily life was a testament to acceptance, unconditional love and tolerance. She remains an inspiration to those fortunate to be part of her legacy of love.Harriet will be interred next to her husband Gene privately in Indiana. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Woodmar United Methodist Church in Hammond, Indiana on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, Harriet’s family requests that donations in her name be made to your favorite charity.
