Ira H. Vis, 71, of Perry, OH passed away after a 4-year battle with brain cancer on January 9, 2012 at his son's house with his family by his side. He was born February 22, 1940 in Chicago, IL to Ira John and Thekla (Bernartz) Vis who preceded him in death.He had previously been a resident of Hammond and Munster, IN for 65 years. He was married to Mary (Murga) Vis on Sept. 5, 1970, who preceded him in death on November 13, 2009.Ira enjoyed his membership at Ridge United Methodist Church. He graduated from Hammond High School in 1958 and Purdue University. He worked for Swift & Co., BP/Amoco Oil for 22 years, and Orbital Engineering as an industrial/electrical engineer. He also wrote two engineering books for Amoco Oil.He spent 12 years as a Boy Scout leader (Calumet Council), serving as a Webelo leader, assistant scout master, and scout master for Troop 542 and the Ridge Trails District. During this time he guided 12 Eagle Scouts and thoroughly enjoyed his experiences with them, including scuba diving at Florida Scout Sea Base, snow skiing in Wisconsin, and fishing and boating outings.Ira loved spending time visiting and playing with his grandchildren and helping his son with home repair projects. He was known for reaching out to help others and for his sense of humor.He is survived by his son, Dr. Douglas (Michelle nee McNamara) Vis, grandchildren Alyssa, Kara, Holly, and Matthew of Perry, OH; and sister Thekla (Terri) Hayes and nieces and nephews in Collinsville, IL.Visitation will be on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 3:00-8:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN. Funeral service will be at Ridge United Methodist Church at 8607 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN 46321 at 11:00 AM, Friday. Interment will be at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merriville, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ridge United Methodist Church or Calumet Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 542, 8751 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN 46321.
