James J. McCormack, 89, of Highland, IN passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen (nee Kenny); sons, John, Jim and Brendan McCormack; daughters, Helen (Jim) Wilkinson and Erin McCormack; grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Wilkinson, Jimmy, Christopher, Patrick, Connor, Sean, Matthew and Lily McCormack; great grandson, Aaron McCormack; sister, Peggy Maher; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 9 siblings in Ireland.Born Seamus J. McCormack in his family home in Lisheen, Greenan County Tipperary Ireland, Jim McCormack was one of 11 siblings. The only one to leave Ireland he immigrated to the U.S. bound for Chicago on Halloween 1949. He immediately found work and began to build a great life for himself and his future family. Jim’s loyalty to his new home was proved when he enlisted and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his service for his new country he moved back to Chicago where he met his loving wife Kathleen Kenny. They have enjoyed a wonderful marriage of over 60 years. Together their family grew to include five adoring children, nine grandchildren and one great grandson. Jim was a great leader in the Irish community in Chicago and throughout the United States. He has served as Chairman of the Boland’s Hurling Club, the Chairman of the Chicago Board as well as the North American Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. His favorite hobby was watching his grandchildren grow and compete in their many activities. Jim will always be greatly respected for all the work he has done for others and will be greatly missed by all. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 2:00-7:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. James Church, 9640 Kennedy Ave. Highland, IN. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Calumet Area, Share Foundation or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org in his memory would be appreciated.
