James Demetris, age 89, of Lansing, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, July 4th, at home. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Betty (Lannon) Demetris; children Tina (Duke) Chambers and Robert (Susan) Demetris; beloved Papu of Jimmy and Nicole Demetris; sister Georgia Kropidlowski; brother-in-law John (Mary Ann) Lannon; and many nieces and nephews.Jim was born in Weirton, West Virginia and attended Weir High School. In 1942, he volunteered to serve his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He primarily served aboard the U.S.S. Hickox (DD-673) and U.S.S. Borie (DD-215). During his service he and his shipmates earned numerous campaign medals, a Navy Unit Commendation and a Presidential Unit Citation.After the war Jim made his way to Chicago and met and married the love of his life, Betty. There, he started his career at U.S. Steel and was a proud member of the United Steelworkers of America. Jim was USW Local 2006 President during his career and after retiring, served as President of Chapter 31-6 of the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retires (SOAR). Per Jim’s wishes, he has been laid to rest with our heavenly father by cremation.
