Jean Marie Stamy Sobek, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on April 24, 2024 at age 99 at Copper Trace Senior Family Living in Westfield, Indiana. Jean was born on January 17, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Edith and Elmer Stamy. She is survived by her children Carol Hyde (James), Christine Sobek (Paul Anderson), Joseph Sobek (Suzi); grandchildren Jimmy, Emily, Kenny (Kassy), Mitch, Elliot, Eric, Amelia; brother Donald Stamy and sister Mary Susan Stamy Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Deacon Joseph James Sobek, her parents Edith and Elmer Stamy, and brother Richard Stamy.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024 directly at St. Thomas More Catholic Church 8501 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN with a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial offered by Reverend Michael Yadron. Interment will follow at St. John-St. Joseph Cemetery Hammond, IN. Visitation will be on Saturday, at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. Mass.
Jean graduated from Marion, Iowa High School, class of 1942, and the University of Iowa, class of 1945, with a degree in psychology. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board honorary societies. Upon graduation she was employed by International Business Machines (IBM) where she met her husband Joseph Sobek in Hammond, Indiana. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before his passing in July 2004. Joseph was ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church and he and Jean were both very involved in parish life and activities at St. Thomas More Church in Munster, Indiana. Jean was also very active with the League of Women Voters, Panhellenic, and the local school district.
After Joseph’s death, Jean relocated to Noblesville, Indiana, and spent many healthy and active years at The Lodge Assisted Living. She appreciated and valued her many good friends and caregivers over the years.
Jean will be remembered as a wonderful and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and aunt and as a good friend to many. She always enjoyed a good conversation and loved hearing about everyone’s life and activities. A celebration of Jean’s life will be planned for this summer.
