Jo H. Merlo, age 84, late of Lansing, IL formerly of Calumet City, IL, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015. She was the beloved sister of Dr. James (late Barbara) Merlo. Loving aunt of Dr. Barbara (Dr. Anthony) Hirschenberger, Dr. Mary (Larry) Murison, Vincent (Karen), Gina, Michael (Dawn), Jamie Merlo and Julie (Angelo) Vitiritti; and dearest great aunt of Tony and Mark Hirschenberger, Megan, Larry and Natalie Murison, Phallyn Merlo, Santo and Angelo Merlo and Louis, Michael and Nicholas Vitiritti. She was preceded in death by her parents Santo and Elvira Merlo, her brother Jerry T. Merlo and fianc√© Cologer \”Stoney\” Monestere. Jo graduated from Thornton Fractional High School and later attended Patricia Vance Modeling School and the Chicago College of Commerce and Industry. She retired from Emro Marketing as Human Resources Manager. Jo was a devout Catholic and lifelong parishioner of St. Victor Church where she served as an usher, greeter and Eucharistic Minister. She was a longtime member, recruiter and past president of the Italian Catholic Federation Branch 195 where she presided over its annual St. Joseph Tavola for many years. She was also an active member of the Thornton Fractional Golden Alumni Association. Jo's greatest acknowledgements were receiving the coveted Christifideles Award from Cardinal Francis George in 2006 for her involvement in the church and the Thornton Township 2015 Women of Honor Award. She lived her life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. Visitation Friday, April 17, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. from the Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. to St. Victor Church. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Entombment Holy Cross Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catholic Charities or the charity of your choice preferred.
