John Mehorczyk, 98, of Dyer, IN, formerly of Riverdale, IL passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 1. He is survived by his loving daughters Ruth (Phillip) Miller, Jean (Frank) Koehler, Julie (Eric) Smevoll; grandchildren, Nikki Miller, John Moreno, and Jordan, Jacob and Jared Smevoll; and sister-in-law Lois (Joseph) Mehorczyk. Preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Ann Lang (1955-2010), and loving wife Clara Krause (1939-1953), baby daughters Catherine Joan and Mary Louise; and brothers and sisters Alexander (Florence), Mary Steffens (Matthew), Walter (Helen), Catherine Plesz (Stanley), and Victoria Mecklenburg (Wayne). Visitation will be on Thursday, November 4 from 3:00 – 8:00PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Avenue, Munster IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be led by Reverend Charles Niblick on Friday, November 5 at 10:00AM at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Drive (corner of Northgate and Sheffield Ave) Dyer, IN. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL. Born in Harvey, Illinois he spent all of his adult and married life in Riverdale where he raised his family and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and a member of St. Mary‚Äôs choir and the Knights of Columbus. He spent his career in the cold storage industry beginning at Central Cold Storage in Riverdale through attaining the role of vice president at Ashland Cold Storage in Chicago, Illinois, until he retired in 1976. Very athletic as a young man, he and his friends would frequently travel down Illinois Route 1 to Loda, Illinois, to play baseball at the only lighted baseball field within many miles. He especially enjoyed watching his beloved White Sox win a World Series.He loved to dance the polka, and his other hobbies included bowling, fishing, gardening, playing cards with his family and friends, and relaxing on his backyard swing while visiting with his neighbors. As a devoted family man, he was dedicated to his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed the company of his many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Maria Goretti Church (500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, IN. 46311) in his memory would be appreciated.
