John R. Sowinski, 75, of Dyer, IN formerly of Lansing, IL passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joy; daughters, Melinda “Ande” (Steve) Gill and Patricia(Rob) Schrum; grandchildren, Jake Schrum, Kira Gill and Grace Schrum; brother, Paul (Ellen) Sowinski; sisters, Alice (Len) Siurek and Susan (Bob) Beatty; brothers-in-law, Charles (late Gertrude) Yingling, Paul (Jan) Yingling and James (Mary) Yingling; several nieces and nephews; preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Mary Sowinski; brothers, Bernard and Ray (late Gertrude) Sowinski. John retired from LaSalle Steel after 33 years of service and Lansing Country Club after 8 years. He served with the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion Post 697 in Lansing who will conduct a service on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Cremation will follow funeral. Visitation will be on Wednesday August 20, 2014 from 3:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
