Louis Surufka of Munster passed away on June 12, 2020. Son of Michael and Victoria (Zolbiski) Surufka, deceased; husband of Trudy (Hoogland), deceased. Survived by children Rev. Michael Surufka, OFM, Linda Carter (husband Scott), Nancy Surufka (partner Sherry Skszek), Mark Surufka (wife Holly Brinduse); grandchildren Rachael, Zachary, Matthew, Emma, and Liam; dozens of nieces and nephews who adored their “Uncle Louie;” countless friends. He was the twelfth of thirteen children, survived by brothers John and Rudolph Surufka and sister-in-law Lorraine (Leo) Surufka.
He served his country in the U.S. Army in active duty in the Korean conflict, returning with several medals and honors. His entire work career was as a service technician with Addressograph-Multigraph and its successors, known for his flexibility, dedication, and friendliness. While training for A-M in Cleveland, Ohio, he was introduced to his beloved Trudy and they fell in love while Polka dancing on free weekends. They married in Roseland (Chicago) and started their family there before moving to Munster where they continued raising their four children.
Retirement opened opportunities for travel with Trudy, enjoying an even wider network of friends, and delighting in his grandchildren. He loved his church, St. Thomas More in Munster, where he served as an usher at the 10:00 am, Sunday Mass for 25 years. The death of his beloved Trudy left a gap that could never be filled, even as his many friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews all staying in regular contact. He loved Polka music, refusing to surrender his love of dancing to the limits of old age. He loved good food, with a near addiction to chicken and kielbasa. He was a genuinely happy man, caring more for the well-being of others than for himself. He was a great storyteller, able to paint pictures with his words and punctuating his stories with one-liners that brought laughter to everyone. His eyes are closed but that bright blue twinkle and mischievous smile are eternal.
